Tip calculator
Work out the gratuity, the full total, and what each person owes when you split the check — no mental math at the table, and no awkward rounding arguments.
How to use this calculator
Enter the bill amount before tip, the tip percentage you want to leave, and the number of people splitting the check. The calculator shows the tip, the grand total, and the per-person share — handy whether you're treating or just figuring out everyone's fair cut.
The math behind it
Tipping is a single percentage applied to the bill, then divided among the group:
So a $84.50 bill with a 20% tip adds $16.90 in gratuity for a $101.40 total. Split four ways, that's $25.35 each. A quick mental shortcut for a 20% tip: take 10% of the bill (just move the decimal one place left) and double it.
How much should you tip?
In the United States, sit-down restaurant service is commonly tipped 15–20%, with 20% increasingly the default for good service. Counter service, takeout, and delivery vary widely and are more discretionary. Customs differ a lot by country — in some places service is already included and extra tipping isn't expected, while in others it's modest. When traveling, it's worth checking the local norm so you neither under- nor over-tip.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on tax?
It's your choice, and the difference is minor. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is perfectly reasonable; tipping on the post-tax total is also common and slightly more generous. Enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill amount.
How do I handle an uneven split?
This calculator splits evenly, which is what most groups do. If people want to pay for exactly what they ordered, total each person's items separately and apply the tip percentage to each subtotal.
What's a quick way to estimate 15% or 20%?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left. For 20%, double it. For 15%, take that 10% and add half of it again. These shortcuts get you close enough to leave a fair tip without a calculator.
